Rachel Caine
The New York Times bestselling author of The Morganville Vampire series answers some questions about herself and life in general.

Rachel Caine is the author of more than fifteen novels, including the Morganville Vampires, Weather Warden, and Outcast Season series. She was born at White Sands Missile Range, which, according to people who know her, explains a lot. She has been an accountant, a professional musician, and an insurance investigator, and until recently, still carried on a secret identity in the corporate world. She and her husband, fantasy artist R. Cat Conrad, live in Texas with their iguanas, Pop-eye and Darwin, a mali uromastyx named (appropriately) O’Malley, and a leopard tortoise named Shelly (for the poet, of course).

Caine grew up in west Texas and graduated from Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, in 1980. She is a 1985 graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting (with a minor in music). She didn’t set out to become a writer … she intended to be a famous professional musician, and in fact did play professionally (clarinet) with several symphonies, and even played with famous conductors and composers like Henry Mancini, Peter Nero and John Williams. Ultimately, though, she decided to leave music for her other passion: writing. Lucky us…right?

We caught up with Rachel Caine in the midst of her promotional tour for KISS OF DEATH, the eighth installment in the popular Morganville Vampire series. She was willing to allow Paperback Dolls to delve into her inner most thoughts and find out what is ticking in that creative noggin of hers. Here’s what we discovered…

    WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST FEAR?
Well, it used to be public speaking, but I think I’m over that now.  I suppose it’s probably spiders.  I try to overcome it, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hold a tarantula without freaking out.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT STATE OF MIND?
Determined.  I have a lot to do in a pretty short period of time, so I think that’s the best description of where I am right now.  Well, and grateful.  I’m VERY grateful for all of the great things that have happened to me over the past few years!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OCCUPATION?(WAY OF SPENDING TIME)

Hmmm, probably reading.  Or watching films/tv shows.

WHAT HISTORICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH?

Probably Ada Lovelace (Who appears in the Morganville books.) 😉

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FICTIONAL HERO?
Probably Prince Corwin from Roger Zelazny’s Amber series.

    WHO ARE YOUR REAL-LIFE HEROES?

Doctors and nurses.  I can’t imagine the courage and strength it takes to do that kind of work, every day.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED POSSESSION?
My cool chameleon-painted Smart car!

WHEN AND WHERE WERE YOU HAPPIEST?
I had a perfect, perfect day once in Heidelburg, Germany, but I think that it has to be my wedding day, for all its rainy, muddy challenges!

WHAT IS YOUR MOST OBVIOUS CHARACTERISTIC?

I have NO idea.  Probably something that would make me blush.  Or cringe.

WHAT IS THE TRAIT YOU MOST DEPLORE (HATE) IN YOURSELF?
I get nervous in interviews.  I wish I could control that better.

WHAT IS THE TRAIT YOU MOST DEPLORE IN OTHERS?
I hate bullies.

    WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE?

I only wish there was a SINGLE one.  I like nice clothes and nice furniture, and art.  Those are my extravagances.

    WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JOURNEY?
Every day is a journey to me — my favorite one, I think.  So many things to see, to discover, and to write and read.  But if you’re talking about a physical journey, I recommend Heidelberg.  It’s fantastic.

WHAT DO YOU MOST DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR APPEARANCE?

I’d love to keep losing weight — only about 50 pounds to go to my goal!

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST OVER-RATED VIRTUE?
Being witty.  Being kind is much, much harder and does more good.

ON WHAT OCCASION DO YOU LIE?
When I turn down chocolate.  I AM LYING WHEN I SAY I DON’T WANT IT.  I DO.

WHICH WORDS OR PHRASES DO YOU MOST OVER-USE?
“Fantastic” and “Awesome.”  But they’re great words.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’d be thinner.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT?
I think just making it this far, considering the health issues I’ve had in the last 6 years.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE?
In the mountains.  Probably around Cumberland Gap, it’s beautiful there.

WHAT IS THE QUALITY YOU MOST ADMIRE IN A MAN?
Humor!

WHAT IS THE QUALITY YOU MOST ADMIRE IN A WOMAN?
Still humor, probably.

WHAT IS IT YOU MOST DISLIKE?
Bell peppers.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN YOUR FRIENDS?
The fact that they put up with me!

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO DIE?
Saving someone else.

IF YOU WERE TO DIE AND COME BACK AS A PERSON OR AN ANIMAL, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE?
I’d love to be a Galapagos tortoise.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE AN OBJECT TO COME BACK AS, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
A pen.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO (WORDS YOU LIVE BY OR THAT MEAN A LOT TO YOU)?
“No matter where you go … there you are.”  (Buckaroo Banzai)

WHO HAS BEEN THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOU?
Probably my father, who really introduced me to fantasy and science fiction in a big way.

WHICH OF YOUR CHARACTERS DO YOU MOST IDENTFY WITH?
Probably Claire, from the Morganville Vampires series.  I was small, not very brave, and got picked on a lot in school.

Rachel Caine was kind enough to share with us some of her favorite recipes!!

SHANE’S CHILI DOGS:
First, you have to make the chili!  Which is this:

Brown 1 pound of ground turkey
In crock pot, combine cooked ground turkey with:
– 2 tbsp red chili powder
– 1 tsp oregano
– 1 tsp salt
– 1 tsp crushed red pepper
– 1 tsp garlic powder
– 2 12 oz cans of tomato sauce (or spicy Manwich sauce for an extra zing!)
(If you’re over 21) 1/2 bottle of dark beer or ale

Heat it all on medium, stirring occasionally.  Cook for about 6 hours.

Then you just boil the hot dogs (or microwave) and serve with chili on top!

RACHEL CAINE’S BLENDER SALSA:
4 tomatos, sliced
2 small purple onions, sliced
1 handful fresh cilantro
1 tbsp white vinegar
1 tbsp red Sriricha chili sauce
salt to taste
jalapeno peppers optional

Toss it all in the blender and hit CHOP!  It only takes a few moments, and it’s delicious.  🙂  I like it with Tostitos Scoop chips.
