Not even death can save her now.
As a grave witch, Alex Craft can speak to the dead-she’s even on good terms with Death himself. As a consultant for the police, she’s seen a lot of dark magic, but nothing has prepared her for her latest case. When she’s raising a “shade” involved in a high profile murder, it attacks her, and then someone makes an attempt on her life. Someone really doesn’t want her to know what the dead have to say, and she’ll have to work with mysterious homicide detective Falin Andrews to figure out why…
I absolutely love it when I find that book that I just simply can’t put down. When interruptions and chores earn a growling response. Food is all but forgotten along with the Internet and television. Kalayna Price’s debut in her new Alex Craft series had me completely glued to it’s pages and devouring it in one sitting!
Neckros, Georgia is one in a thousand of other lands that opened up to the world after the Great Awakening when the Fae and Witches both came out of hiding seventy years ago. Alex Craft is a consultant for the Neckros Police Department. Her wyrd ability as a Grave Witch, someone who can see in “grave sight” to raise the shades of dead people, allows her to not only speak with the dead, but help them find their own murderers. As multiple bodies of women have been found dumped all over Neckros, Alex is called on to help find the reason to their murders.
It’s not until after Alex bumps heads with the lead Detective Falin on another case involving a Governor does her situation take a turn for the worse. Already in the public eye for making a landmark case where a shade takes the witness stand in a murder case, Alex gets even more recognition when someone tries to kill her on the Neckros Police Station steps. Which case is it related to? Who’s been killing these women? And why doesn’t Governor Coleman’s body have a shade? Alex will have to work with Detective Falin to figure out the puzzle, but if she doesn’t find out something soon she may not be alive much longer to care.
Grave Witch is what urban fantasy is all about: fast paced, mysteries galore, and a main character that is smart yet stubborn beyond belief even in the face of stronger enemies. As somewhat of a urban fantasy snob, what puts the cherry on my sundae, is not only when I find that book that consumes me, but also when it’s about something I’ve never seen before and I love Ms.Price’s ideas from her Grave Witches to the rest of her wyrd community.
Grave Witch is well written with just the right amount of mystery, intrigue, action and yes even some romance. Her characters were well defined, but not fully unveiled to us just yet. We still have so much to learn. My favorite was Death, he is what his name implies. And there is a love triangle brewing, but I find I’m more intrigued by it than upset by it’s presence. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it plays out. I have no idea what is coming next for Alex Craft, but I’m extremely eager to find out where Ms. Price takes us next.
