>ARC Review- Graveminder by Melissa Marr + GIVEAWAY

GraveminderThe New York Times bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series delivers her first novel for adults, a story about the living, the dead, and a curse that binds them.

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn’t a funeral that Maylene didn’t attend, and at each Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words “Sleep well, and stay where I put you.”

Now Maylene is dead and Bek must go back to the place–and the man–she left a decade ago. But what she soon discovers is that Maylene was murdered and that there was good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in placid Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected. Beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D–a place from which the dead will return if their graves are not properly minded. Only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk…

I have always felt like Marr’s Wicked Lovely series had a distinctively mature feeling to them, so it is no surprise that Melissa Marr decided to try her hand at a book written for the adult audience–and her freshman effort was a WIN in my book! I cannot compare it to anything else that I have read lately. Melissa Marr has renewed Gothic fiction in new ways that are sure to excite fans of the genre.

A secret world of the dead lies underneath a small quaint little town that holds a dark secret. A young woman who left the town and never looked back is forced to return to face the people she left behind and the legacy she never knew she had.

Told from alternating viewpoints of various town residents, both living and deceased, this story is truly fascinating. The author was able to really distinguish the different characters voices. The interactions and dialogue of the characters, particularly between Rebekkah (the Graveminder) and Byron (the Undertaker), made them come to life in very real and emotional ways. Their personalities and thoughts were captivating at times even disturbing, but always amazing.

GRAVEMINDER is a meticulously woven story that is dark and gritty, while at the same time honestly displaying beauty and soul. Reading this book is like being served a full and balanced meal, it leaves one completely satisfied and appreciative of the flavor that lingers in it’s stead.

*This book was given to PBD for review as part of the travelling arc tour;)
